I was in Barcelona for International women day and literally walked around a corner and into 10,000 women chanting in Spanish! When in Spain…… so I joined and started chanting, no idea in the slightest what I was actually saying but from the mix of English signs I saw they were marching for a mix of women’s rights!
So I thought I would share some of my favourite pictures from the march and 20 of my favourite feminists quotes!
“No woman gets an orgasm from shining the kitchen floor. ” —Betty Friedan
“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” —Audre Lorde
“It’s not my responsibility to be beautiful. I’m not alive for that purpose. My existence is not about how desirable you find me.”— Warsan Shire
“You want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not secretary of state; I am. If you want my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I am not going to be channeling my husband.” — Hillary Clinton
“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with.” – Emma Watson
“Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it’s personal. And the world won’t end. And the speaking will get easier and easier. And you will find you have fallen in love with your own vision, which you may never have realized you had. And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don’t miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you. And you will still flirt and paint your nails, dress up and party, because, as I think Emma Goldman said, ‘If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.’ And at last you’ll know with surpassing certainty that only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth. And that is not speaking.” —Audre Lorde
“Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke…She will need her sisterhood.” —Gloria Steinem
“Feminism involves so much more than gender equality. And it involves so much more than gender. Feminism must involve a consciousness of capitalism (I mean, the feminism that I relate to. And there are multiple Feminisms, right). It has to involve a consciousness of capitalism and racism and colonialism and post colonialities and ability and more genders than we can even imagine, and more sexualities than we ever thought we could name.” —Angela Davis, Feminism & Abolition: Theories & Practices for the 21st Century
“You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure.” —Mary Beard, Women & Power: A Manifesto
“You don’t have to be pretty. You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female.'” —Erin McKean
“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.”— Cheris Kramarae
“We need to reshape our own perception of how we view ourselves. We have to step up as women and take the lead.”—Beyoncé
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made… It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” —Ruth Bader Ginsburg
“A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.”— Naomi Wolf
“A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman.” —Melinda Gates
“Human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights. Let us not forget that among those rights are the right to speak freely – and the right to be heard.” – Hillary Clinton
“Feminism is for everybody” ―bell hooks
“It is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals. We should stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by who we are.” – Emma Watson
“It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.” —Madeleine Albright
“Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” —G.D. Anderson
